Harvest Monday

December 15, 2014

We were able to harvest some kale, onions (wild), and celery this week.DSC_6531 DSC_6532

The box that has the lettuce in it is covered so tightly, I don’t have the motivation to get in there and harvest lettuce.

The temps have been steadily in the 50s during the day and just below freezing at night. Perfect weather to work outside…but someone has been lacking in motivation. :\

The places where I have horse manure have sprouted weeds in this lovely weather. We’ve been letting the chickens free-range a couple hours a day and they have taken care of many of the weed seeds. My beds are no longer pretty but I just tell my OCD-self that it’s a good thing πŸ™‚

What is NOT good is that the chickens keep digging up my newly planted bulbs! Whenever they start doing that, I put them back in the run right away! They would get to stay out a lot longer if they would stay away from the spring bulbs. Crazy chickens.

Are you harvesting in December where you are? Check out what others are harvesting at Daphne’s Dandelions πŸ™‚

I know how you feel about motivation. Though we have been cold. Finally it has gotten back into the 40s here for for a while. I so prefer being outside when it is warm and sunny instead of cold and dreary.

I grew this celery from store-bought celery that I cut and replanted. I used this celery (and the onion) in some bean burgers I made. We have not braved eating them raw yet πŸ™‚

Yup – motivation is sometimes hard to come by. That’s one of the great things about winter – it gives you a nice long break so that in the spring (or even earlier!) you are raring to go.
